It has to be the best non running cardio work out you can get in the winter.Just got done an hour and half,I'm soaking wet from sweating.
If you bike in the summer this is the best exercise for those muscles in the winter.

I've wanted to try this for the longest time. Do you walk faster or slower compared to hard surface?
Have you tried cross country skiing?

Well, you can go as fast as you want.I absolutley hate running on any kind of surface winter or summer. So I got into hiking and over the last year.In the winter I go snowshowing through the woods on trails and up hills with a backpack. I actually bought a weight vest for hiking in the non winter months.
I've tried cross country skiing but it wasn't for me. Snowshoeing you can go anywhere on most any surface because of the crampons on the bottom of the shoes.

Snowshoeing is a great form of aerobic exercise that will improve or maintain cardiovascular fitness as well as burn calories. It uses major muscle groups at relatively high intensities for extended periods of time, thus requiring a high caloric expenditure. Your metabolic rate increases in cold weather, and the addition of the weight of snowshoes on your feet combine( with the resistance of moving through snow adds up to a greater demand for energy than simply walking or running. Snowshoeing can burn up to 45 percent more calories than walking or running at the same speed.
